Nigeria dominates Ghana
Nigeria has recorded her fourth successive win over Ghana in competitive football in the past year. Last Saturday the Black Satellites of Ghana were soundly beaten 2-0 in Lagos by their Nigerian opponents, Flying Eagles. The other defeats by the Nigerians over Ghana were the Flying Eagles' elimination on home and away basis of the Black Stars in the Los Angeles Olympic qualifying series and the Cup of Nations tourney in the Ivory Coast.A further defeat inflicted on Ghana by Nigeria was at the club level where Sekondi Hasaacas were beaten by New Nigerian Bank in the WAFU Cup final.
Ghana's second national team, Black Meteors whose age group is 23, are not taking part in the Junior World Cup because the contest is open only to the under 20s.
In the Junior World Cup contest the youthful Ghanaians did not fail to impress the large number of spectators with their entertaining display. But they found the Flying Eagles a side very determined to win. Nigerian commentators however pointed out an apparent advantage on the part of the victorious Flying Eagles with such players as Kingsley Onye, Monday Onyechi, Augustine Igbinaubaro, Uwem Ekarika, Monday Odiaka and Friday Elaho, all of whom feature for top club sides in the first division of the National League.
Handball competition
Two more countries have signalled their intention to participate in the 3rd All- Africa Junior Handball Championships scheduled for Bauchi, from December 23 to 31. This brings to ten the number of participating countries.The secretary of the Handball Association of Nigeria (HAN), Mr Femi Omigade named the countries as Egypt, Ivory Coast, Angola, Senegal, Gabon, Morocco, Republic of Benin and Central Africa Republic.
Mr Omigade said that it would be a record if more countries should enter for the continental tourney.
The gold cup for the championships was donated by Chief M.K.O. Abiola in memory of late General Murtala Muhammed.
At the first championships held in Nigeria in 1980 the Nigerian boys team won the men's trophy while the ladies trophy went to Ivory Coast.
Bank team to retain Wafu Cup
New Nigerian Bank were expected to retain their WAFU cup when they met Stade Malien of Bamako in the second leg final of the West African Football Union (WAFU) at the National Stadium,. Surulere on Saturday.. In the first leg played in Bamako, Mali on October 7, the Nigerian team defeated their opponents 3-2. Officials for the cup final were: Mr Hina Djibo, referee, with Djigaye Amadou and Mamadou Amadou as linesmen. The Vice President of WAFU, Mr John Beh of Liberia was the match commissioner.Ghana's military to help boxers
Military physical training experts are to assist in the revival of boxing in Ghana. Colonel Alhaji Seidu Ayumah, Commander of the Second Infantry Brigade who disclosed this in Kumasi stated that organised boxing clubs could apply to the Second Infantry Brigade for the trainers to assist them in unearthing talents for the promotion and development of boxing.Registrations of players
Registration of players for the 1985 first division league was expected to be conducted at various centres last week. A Ghana Football Association (GFA) release said the registration exercise would follow last year's pattern. The release said clubs were to register at separate registration stations.Green Eagles qualify
Green Eagles have qualified for the second round of the 1986 World Cup African qualifying series.They beat the Liberian side the Lone Stars 1-0 in Monrovia in the second leg tie, thus qualifying on 4-0 goal aggregate. Nigeria won the first leg 3-0 in Lagos three weeks ago.
The lone goal of the match was scored by Clement Temile in the 42nd minute after Nigeria had missed three scoring chances through Humphrey Edobor, Wahab Adesina and Tajudeen Disu in the 36th, 39th and 41st minutes respectively.
Nigeria will now meet the winner between Libya and Angola in the second round match.
Cuban help for Ghana sports
Ghana has benefited tremendously from sports assistance given by the Cuban Government, according to Mr Amarkai Amarteifio, Secretary for Youth and Sports.Mr Amarteifio said three Cuban sports experts attached to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council (NSC) came at at time when sports administration was being re-organised.
The Secretary said the three Cubans were hard-working and that Ghanaian coaches and sportsmen had learned a lot from them to put Ghana on a sound footing in sports promotion. Mr Amarteifio was speaking at a send-off party for the Cubans at the Sports Stadium Conference Hall. He was hopeful that Cuba would continue to assist Ghana in sports development.
Mr Lennis Jual leader of the Cuban team said he appreciated the efforts being made by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and hoped with careful planning, Ghana would win back her past glories in international sports.
The two others are Mr Pedro Azoy, athletic coach, and Mr Lorenzo Martinez, boxing coach.
Anazor is new champ
Obele Anazor of Anambra is the new National Featherweight boxing champion after outpointing Kabiru Akindele, the leading contender to the title, vacated by Eric Boone, over 12 rounds. Referee Folorunsho Jacob from Lagos State scored it 118-117 for Anazor, who entered the fight as the number two contender.Fighting director sentenced
The technical director of Burkina Faso' (Upper Volta's) National soccer team has been suspended without pay for hitting a journalist who wrote a story which dis- pleased him. A government statement in Ouagadougou said that Daniel Coulibaly was suspended for "aggression job" after reading a report in the government daily Sidwaya.It said: "Sincere and committed militants" in Burkina Faso should not settle scores by fighting, adding that the country's inhabitants could always write to Sidwaya if they thought an article in it was inaccurate.
International recognition for Mama
Ghanaian light heavyweight boxer Prince Mama Mohamed has attracted inter- national recognition following his seventh round technical knock-out win over American Henry Hearns in New York.The referee had to step in midway in the round to save Hearns, who had been badly trapped defenceless on the ropes.
Hearns described as a top contender for Michael Spinks world crown, had predicted a third round win. But when he failed to carry out his prediction, the Ghanainan took over and lashed tremendously at him.
