Akinloye Pledges Support

Chief Adisa Akinloye the erstwhile powerful Chairman of the banned National Party of Nigeria (NPN) has dissociated himself from 'politicians such as Umaru Dikko and Isiaku and from any of the former political parties or shades of opinion who have declared to sabotage the Federal Military Government.'

In a statement carried as a full page advertiser's announcement in the Sunday Concord, the ex-chairman of the NPN pledged his loyalty to the nation and the government and swore a solemn oath that he is not engaged in any subversive activities abroad 'or in Nigeria against the government, my people and Nigeria and I shall never do such a thing.'

Chief Akinloye said in the statement that he had decided to declare his stand because 'evil and malicious people had been spreading false propaganda about him concerning crimes allegedly committed by him and his intentions to the present Military government.

The statement asserted that the civilian administration had failed to satisfy the aspirations of the people and it was because of the shortcomings that the Army had taken over the government.

"I solemnly pledge my support to the Federal Military Government" Chief Akinloye said. He said that he had for the past twenty years dedicated his life to the policy of unity and solidarity among all Nigerians... and had behaved with a deep sense of patriotism.

He stated that since his arrival in Britain on the 1st January 1984, he had been “alone and kept to myself. I have had no contact with any of the former politicians. I have kept myself for deep reflections and to commune with my God. I have never seen or spoken to Umaru Dikko or Isiaku”.

The same issue of the Sunday Concord that carried Chief Akinloye's statement, carried a front page story attributed to the Chief of Staff Brig. Tunde Idiagbon which alleged that Chief Akinloye, Alhaji Umaru Dikko, Alhaji Maitana Yusuf, Mr Joseph Wayas were involved in a $300 million mercenary plot to invade Nigeria and overthrow the military government.
