Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches

The near hysterical reaction which greeted the edited version, and subsequently the unedited repeat showing on Nigerian Television of this documentary adequately exposed the serious short-comings of an otherwise well-conceived project with serious national and international implications.

It was, therefore, with anticipation that the repeat screening of this controversial BBC-Nigerian Television Co-production which one hoped would take a "more reflective look at what happened then and what is happening now" on BBC2 'Third Eye' was watched last Monday.

Regrettably, Ms Onwenu did not do much to deflect the accusation of bias and almost cavalier approach to such a subject which touches on the very economic nerve centre of the country. Considering the fact that it is a personal view and most of the filming was done before the coup in January, Ms Onwenu had both the benefit of hindsight and six months after the event to have reviewed the military's role so far in their attempts to repair the damaged economy.

The disappointment of viewers must have been great when she casually only mentioned the currency exchange which was aimed at siphoning off the billions of naira outside the country. The horrendous problems unleashed on the masses who have always suffered when the riches were being squandered during the currency exchange did not merit a mention, neither did the current unwarranted onslaught on the very profession that she belongs to get a mention.

Perhaps, when Ms Onwenu comes over the to UK sometime this week, she may have the opportunity to fill us in on the obviously missing pieces in the "squandering of riches" jigsaw puzzle.
