Final test for African athletes
Thirty countries have so far confirmed their participation in the third African Athletics Championship scheduled for Rabat from 12 to 15 July. Hosts Morocco will be represented by 60 athletes. The championships constitute a final test for the African athletes prior to the Los Angeles Olympic Games.Liberia's team at Los Angeles
A 12-man national track and field team. including one coach and a technical adviser has been selected by the National Track and Field Federation to represent Liberia at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in the United States. Chad will send five athletes to the summer Olympics in Los Angeles, official sources said in N'Djamena. They will compete in the high jump, long jump, 100 metres, 1,500 metres and javelin. Ghana's middleweight boxing champion Abdul Umaru Sanda has beaten Britains Cliff Gilpin in a gruelling 10 round non-title fight in Accra. Gilping manager Mike Sendell was full of praises for Sanda after the fight. He said "Sanda is a very good boxer, he needs more warm up fights to be a world beater". Despite an earlier downpour, the two boxers announced their determination for action with Sanda delivering an uppercut which missed but had enough wind behind it to put Cliff on the Canvas. Cliff was on his feet immediately with a ferocious counterpunch which missed, then a jab from Sanda again put Cliff on the floor. Sanda dominated the second and third rounds with some first class boxing giving the impression that Cliff would not last the distance as he opened a cut on the Briton's right eye.Hakeem goes professional
Basketball star Hakeem Olajuwon in New York has begun his professional career following his selection by the Houston Rockets at the 1984 National Basketball Association (NBA) college draft. Before an estimated crowd of 3,000 basketball fans, including his mother, Akeem stepped on to the rostrum, led by the owner of his new team, Mr Charles Thomas, to declare his commitment to the Houston Rockets. Donations to Ghana's Olympic Committee Appeal Fund continue to pour in. The latest donations, which totalled C274,500, came from 11 companies. Two of them, Irani Brothers and Ghana Textile Manufacturing Company (GTMC), donated £50,000 each. Other donors were Mechanical Lloyd C40,00, B.S.F. Defending champions New Nigeria Bank, has joined the last eight of the West African Football Union championships with a 5-1 win over visiting Stade D'Abidjan in their return second round encounter in Lagos. Free-kicks by skipper Stephen Keshi and left half-back Bright Omokaro, put the Bankers two goals up in the first half. A rejuvenated New Nigeria Bank turned on the heat in a free-scoring second half with goals from dashing Samson Ozogula, Keshi (penalty) and Joseph Abbey sealing the Ivorien's fate.
