Hero's welcome for Nigeria's Olympic sportsmen
Nigeria's contingent to the Los Angeles Olympic games have been accorded a hero's welcome home. At a civic reception for them Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari stated that this was the right time for the entire nation to start preparation for the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.Major-General Buhari noted that since Nigerian athletes could perform so well at the Los Angeles Olympics with only a back- up of four months preparation, it was evident that more medals would be won if they started preparing now, for the Seoul Olympics.
Nigeria won two medals in Los Angeles, a silver by Peter Konyegwachie for the featherweight, boxing event, and a bronze in the 4x 400 metres relay. The Head of State said countries whose athletes won medals at the Los Angeles Olympics did not start preparing for it within four months.
He therefore, enjoined the Nigeria Olympic Committee not to relent its efforts in ensuring that more honours were won for the country in the 1988 Olympics.
The contingent had earlier driven colourful motorcade from the airport to the National Stadium, Surulere.
The athletes were told that their names would "be written in gold when the history of Nigeria's sports would be written."
"Your names will also appear on the hall of fame to be placed at the National Stadium, Surulere so that future sportsmen and women will see and remember you for what you have done for the country."
Preparation for 24th Olympiad begins
Early preparations towards the Nigeria's participation at the 24th Olympiad, 1988 in Seoul, South Korea, will proceed as projected.Already, initial bottlenecks that have characterised Nigeria's sports preparations in the past have been effectively eliminated, with the highly successful N5 million Olympic Games Appeal Fund drive.
Nigeria Olympic Committee acting president, Lateef Adegbite, assuring Nigerians in Lagos, said proceeds of the Appeal Fund "have put the NOC in a comfortable position to plan ahead."
"We will proceed without delay to tackle the objectives we set out to achieve when the fund was launched in April. And that includes laying the infrastructure for preparations towards future Olympic Games," Mr Adegbite told an enthusiastic audience at a rally welcoming the Nigerian team from the 23rd Olympic Games.
8 African Nations won Olympic medals

Players invited to camp
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) F invited 75 under 20 players to camp at E Specialist Training College, Winneba, preparation for the world youth football tournament.A statement from the GFA said Gha was scheduled to meet Gambia in the first leg on 9 September in Banjul. Gambia, with the second leg coming off in Accra on 1 September.
The team which would be pruned down to 40 after the first week would be handled by coaches Addo Odametey, J.A. Apar and E.K. Afranie with Paul Lartey, a welfare officer. The technical handler would work hand in hand with Mr Koj Quarshie and Boye Sowah both of them
Hearts lose to Kotoko
Ghana's defending champions, Asante Kotoko have propelled themselves back into the national league championship race with a 1-0 victory over traditional rivals, Hearts of Oak at the Accra Stadium. in a It was a victory most significant because, GFA. to the it has thrown the championship race wide open. An official of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Mr J.B. Ogufere, has been elected the 4th Vice-President of the West African Football Union (WAFU). According to a press release from the NFA's Lagos Secretariat, the Nigerian's election came after the sub-continental union's congress had "adopted a new statute which provides for 5 vice-presidents and a 16-man steering committee." In the elections held in Lome, Togo, four other vice-presidents from Togo, Liberia, Mali and Burkina Fasso (Upper Volta) were elected. Mr Ogufere, who is Nigeria's representative in the WAFU's steering committee, becomes the third Nigerian to hold an executive post in the football body.Abuja obtains State status
The Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, (Abuja) can now take a state status in football in Nigeria.. The Nigeria Football Association has accorded the Federal Capital Territory Football Association a "state Status" distinct from its former affiliation with Niger State Football Association. Ghana's national middleweight champion Abdul Umaru Sanda is billed to take on his Nigerian counterpart, Hunter Clay for the vacant African Boxing Union (ABU) middleweight title on 8 September, 1984 at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Sanda-Hunter fight would also. produce a contender to have a shot at the vacant Commonwealth middleweight title.This was disclosed by Mr Eddie Blay, manager of the Eddy Blay International Promotions Ltd at a press conference Accra.
According to Mr Blay all arrangements for the fight has been concluded w Sanda's opponent. However, the order the fight was yet to be received from ABU which has shown genuine interest.
Last June Umaru Sanda won a ten-round Commonwealth challenge fight against British middleweight boxer Cliff Gioip the Accra Sports Stadium.
