Atiso loses tennis title
Ghana's world ranked junior tennis champion Kwajo Atiso has been overthrown by Nigeria's Innocent Modika to become the new undisputed West African junior champion.Southpaw Atiso, who is ranked No. 58 by the International Tennis Federation (ITE) was never given a breathing space by Modika in a classic game of serve and Volley. The Nigerian needed an attacking strategy to put off the Ghanaian cunning slicing cross courts. In other results Modika and Obidiegwu won the doubles champion- ship beating their Ghanaian counterparts.
Togolese ranked No. 9 in the world junior tennis, Miss Akoutan Abueno, had little difficulty dismissing Miss Akomolafe of Nigeria, 6-1, 6-2 to become the champion. With this win she is now seeded No. 2 to Senegalese Miss Mariam Berthe in West Africa. Nigeria's pair of S. Iron and Akonolafe also beat their Togolese counterparts to emerge doubles champions.
Help needed for hockey promotion
The Ghana Hockey Association has sent "SOS" to a number of well meaning Ghanaians for financial help. The GHA needs the financial aid to ensure the national junior hockey team's participation in the African hockey championships in Casablanca, Morocco. The winners and the runners-up of the two week Casablanca tournament beginning on September 4, will represent Africa in the junior hockey world cup schedule for next year in Canada.He said "the GHA stands the risk of a fine and a possible suspension from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) if Ghana fails to attend the tournament and that is why the GHA is bent on sending a team to Morocco.
Odizor nurses injury
Nduka Odizor, hoping to return to business at the ATP Championship, had another major setback when his racket hand injury recurred during a training session. Odizor has not played in a tournament since June 28 when he retired midway through his second round match against West German Boris Becker at Wimbledon Championships. Odizor saw his doctor and was told to rest the hand for two days. He was also given prescriptions which should help relieve the pain,Odizor had planned to use this tournament as a tune up for the US Open after spending the last seven weeks at home in Houston.
Preliminaries for world soccer cup
Nigeria and Liberia have agreed on dates for the first round eliminator of the 1986 World Soccer Cup. The Green Eagle will host the 'All Stars' on October 20 in Lagos for the first leg. The return leg comes up on November 4 in Monrovia, and the winner on goals aggregate will qualify for the second round.Asekum retains post
The chairman of the Amateur Swimming Association in Nigeria (ASAN), Dr Olu Asekum, has been re-elected to serve another four years-term in the Federation of International Swimming Associations (FINA) Bureau.The Nigerian, who officiated at the recently concluded Los Angeles Olympic Games, was elected along with 5 others from the world at large. The others comprise two representatives each from both the Americans and Europe, and one from Asia. Dr Asekun was also elected Bureau liaison to FINA's Medical Committee at the world body's first meeting. A silver pin was also awarded to the Nigerian for his meritorious services to FINA over the past eight years.
Lamptey joins WAFU executive committee
A spokesman for the GHA said that the association had to look for financial assistance from somewhere because the National Sports council and the government have made it clear that they could not afford the cost involved.The West African Football Union (WAFU) has accepted Ghana on the executive committee of the Union at a secretariat meeting held in Lome, Togo.
Consequently, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has sponsored Major (rtd) George Lamptey as its representative on the executive committee of the WAFU which has its secretariat in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
At the Lome meeting Ghana was represented by Messrs Kojo Quarshie and K. Ampim-Darko, vice-chairman and executive secretary respectively of the GFA.
