Hearts win Ghana league

Accra Hearts of Oak have emerged champions of this year's Ghanaian soccer league. They achieved this feat by beating Real Tamale United 1-0 in the most crucial match of the competition at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Real Tamale United needed to win the match to overtake Hearts and become the first team from the northern part of the country to win the first division league cup. By this victory, Accra Hearts of Oak will represent Ghana in next year's African Football Champions Cup competition. Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Ghana's other representative in the African continental Cup Winners Cup contest also beat Obuasi Goldfields 1-0 in their final match two weeks ago.

Preparations for Judo contest

Two women judo teams from Togo and Algeria will meet Nigeria in international trial competitions from October 28.

The trials are aimed at preparing Nigeria for the Third World Women's Judo Championship beginning in Vienna, Austria, on November 8.

Twenty six Nigerian women judokas are in camp for the world championships.

Nigeria was eliminated in the quarter- finals of the 1982 championships in Paris.

Cameroon beat Libya

Canon of Yaounde beat Al Ahly of Libya 1-0 in an African Cup Winners' Cup semi-final first leg tie in Yaounde.

Cameroonian captain Emmanuel Kunde scored in the 24th minute. The other two semi-finalists, Arab Contractors and National, both of Egypt, tied 0-0 in their first leg match in Cairo.

Odizor back on top

Nduka Odizor of Nigeria who has been kept out of tennis for the past eleven months due to an injury has again shot into the limelight when he jointly took the men's doubles of the 195,000 dollar Japan Open Championships in Tokyo.

Odizor partnered American David Dowlen to beat the all-American pair of Mark Davidson and Steve Meister 6-7, (3-7), 6-4, 6-3 in a competitive final.

The Tokyo victory is a morale booster for the 26-year-old Houston-based Nigerian pro who has been without a title despite his impressive performances.

Green Eagles win 3-0

Nigeria beat Liberia 3-0 in a World Cup first leg tie played at the National Stadium, Surulere last week.

The Nigerian attack spearheaded by right-winger John Chidozie, who was flown in from London where he plays for Tottenham Hotspur, proved too swift for the Liberians who conceded two goals in the first half.

The Liberians who at that stage looked like being overwhelmed with a dozen goals however came back strongly in the second half to threaten the Nigerians with near misses at goal.

Their hopes were dashed when Nigeria scored a third goal in the 77th minute to earn them a comfortable lead in the two match contest.

Cameroon protests against ban

A delegation of the Cameroon Football Association has left Yaounde for Zurich, headquarters of FIFA, to seek the reversal of a ban imposed on Africa's best footballer and former skipper of African Champion club, the Indomitable Lions. The skipper, Theopile Abega, who now plays professional football in France, was about to score a goal that would have brought his country level with Canada during the Los Angeles Olympic soccer contest when the Italian referee showed him a red card for an offence that was not explained to him.

In an earlier appeal Cameroon FA has told FIFA that the Italian referee who 'masterminded the elimination of Cameroon in Los Angeles was no better than an armed robber." The delegation to the FIFA headquarters has orders from the Cameroon FA to remain in Zurich until the suspension of Theophile Ageba is quashed.

Shooting Stars are victorious

IICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan beat Semassi Sokodeof 5-1 in the first leg semi-final of the Champions Clubs soccer contest. Three goals by Rotimi Ademodi and one each by Felix Owolabi and Rashid Yekinni wrapped up the match for the Nigerians.

Liberia defeated

Ivory Coast has beaten Liberia 3-0 (half- time 1-0) in an international soccer friendly match in Abidjan. The goals were scored by Lucien Kouadio (41st minute), Guede Gba (58th) and Abdoulaye Traore (70th).

Canada beats Nigeria

Union Bank, regular finalists at the J.F. Kennedy Memorial hockey championships, were beaten 7-6 on penalties by Canadian representatives Voyageur in Washington, US.

The two sides tied 1-1 at full time. But the game was immediately decided on a shoot- out following the cancellation of extra time due to poor visibility. The Nigerian side had earlier defeated the Washington Cubs 2-0 and Halifax of Canada 2-1 in the quarter and semi-finals, respectively.
