Mama to fight for world title

Prince Mama Mohamed, Ghana's fourth ranked world light-heavyweight boxing champion, is likely to be Michael Spinks' next opponent. A cable sent to Accra said contacts made at the Spinks camp have indicated the champion is to meet David Sears, the eleventh ranked American on February, 23 after which actual negotiations could be initiated.

Managed by a Nigerian Mr Nnamdi Moweta, Mama Mohamed is currently based in Los Angeles where his exploits have shot him into the fourth rank.

A former CISM gold medalist Mama joined the paid ranks in 1979 and rose to become Ghana and West African heavy- weight champion before leaving for the US in a quest for more laurels.

At 27, he is credited with 29 fights in which he has drawn one, lost one and won 14 of the rest inside the distance.

Nigeria, Ethiopia in semi- final clash

Nigeria will meet Ethiopia in the semi-final of the African Junior World Soccer Cup qualifying series.

Ethiopia qualified on a 3-1 goal aggregate over Zimbabwe.

The semi-final matches are to be played by March 31. They will feature Ivory Coast vs Tunisia, which eliminated Morocco and Nigeria vs Ethiopia. Nigeria and Ivory Coast were Africa's representatives at the last Junior World Cup in Mexico in 1983. Ivory Coast qualified for the semi-finals by beating Guinea 3-1 after holding them to a goalless draw in Conakry.

Junior volleyball championships

Nigeria will not be represented in the Junior World Volleyball championships this year. This is the result of her inability to compete in the African zone qualifying series held in Cairo, Egypt on December 25, last year.

According to the Nigeria Amateur Volleyball Association (NAVA) office in Lagos the letter of invitation sent by the host nation reached them two weeks after the competition. The NAVA Secretary, Mr Alex Onyenwenwa, who received the letter attributed the delay to poor letter distribution system in the country. He expressed disappointment for their inability to compete in the qualifying series.

Tax relief to sports sponsors in Ghana

A scheme to give tax relief to companies and firms that sponsor sporting events is to be introduced in Ghana.

A paper on the scheme is being prepared by the Youth and Sports Ministry and it will soon be presented to the government for approval.

Youth and Sports Secretary, Amarkai Amartefio gave this hint when receiving four silver cups from two sports personalities on behalf of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana SWAG at his office.

Such a scheme, Mr Amarkai said, was being practised in South Korea and hoped its adoption in the country would go a long way to help Ghana's sports promotion and development programme.

He regretted that the burden of sports promotion and development in the country had fallen squarely on the Government and said it was against this backdrop that he sincerely appreciated the noble gesture of the two donors, Mr Zac Bentum, Managing Director of BP Ghana Limited and Mr Ray Quarcoo director West African Flexplan International.

Both Mr Bentum and Mr Quarcoo presented two silver cups each to the SWAG for presentation to award winners at its annual awards dance.
