Azumah defends world title
Ghana's Azuma Nelson makes a mandatory defence of his world featherweight title on April 1 against the number one contender, Mexican Marcon Villasana at the Los Angeles Forum.Azuma won the title on December 1 when he knocked out the former 28-year-old Puerto-Rican champion Wilfredo 'Bazooka' Gomez at the Bithorn Stadium.
Azuma's defence should have taken place in mid-March as ordered by the World Boxing Authority (WBA) but was put off to April 1 to enable the Ghanaian champion to recover from exhaustion following an extensive tour of Ghana to present his title belt to the country's traditional rulers.
It will be Azuma's twenty second fight, twenty of which he won, fifteen within the distance and only one loss to another former world featherweight champion. For Marcon Villasana this is his thirty second fight, twenty seven of which he won, 23 via the knockout route and three losses.
Asante Kotoko scale first hurdle
Kumasi Asante Kotoko are among eight other representative sides that have scaled through the first round of the current African Cup Winners Cup competition. The Ghanaian champions bounced back from a lone defeat away in the first leg to steam-roll visiting Mighty Barolle of Liberia 3-0 on their return clash in Kumasi. Cameroonian champions Dihep De Nkam recorded similar triumph at home as they hammered Desporto De Agosto 3.0 to erase an earlier 1-0 first leg defeat in Angola. FC-105 of Gabon beat visiting State D'Abidjan 5-1 in a free-scoring return. In Togo, hosts Asfosa edged out Scaf Tocages of Central African Republic on superior goal power with a 2-0 triumph, after going down 3-1 two weeks earlier. The best win of the series came through Senegalese Champions Jeanne D'Arc who travelled to Kenitra for a 1-0 win over Renaissance Sportive to complete a double over the Moroccans.Horoya of Guinea also got through despite losing by a lone goal against Gambians Wallidan. Nigeria's junior national side, the Flying Eagles have been in Nairobi, Kenya, to acclimatize in preparation for their return junior World Cup qualifying round on March 31 against Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.Nigeria Football Association secretary Patrick Okpomo said the Eagles would leave for Addis Ababa from Nairobi where they were expected to engage in a number of warm-up matches against local opposition.
"Addis Ababa is cold at this time of the year and we do not want to take chances hence the arrangement for the Flying Eagles to acclimatize in Kenya" he explained adding, "We are aware of the fact that the Ethiopians would not take things lying low, therefore the NFA is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Nigeria qualifies for the finals in Moscow".
Gambia bans soccer club
Gambia's soccer federation has banned the country's Ports Authority Football Club from further participation in the African Cup of Champion Clubs following "a humiliating 8-0 defeat" by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces in a first-round Abiola first-leg match in Morocco.In a statement issued in Banjul, the federation described the side's performance as "disgraceful and harmful to Gambia football". Officials and players were to blame for the team's state unpreparedness, it concluded.
Ports Authority would also not play the return leg in Banjul.
Polytechnic games open
No less than 25 institutions, drawn from various states of the Federation will take part in this years' Nigerian Polytechnic Games from April 6-13 in Lagos.They include defending champions Kaduna Polytechnic, Bauchi State Polytechnic, Bida Polytechnic, and the hosts Yaba College of Technology, who were runners up at the corresponding series, two years ago in Kaduna.Ghana picks handball team

Nigerians win C'wealth tennis title
The Nigerian pair, Atanda Musa and Sule won the men's doubles title at the Commonwealth table tennis championship at Douglas, Isle of Man.The men's singles title was won by Desmond Douglas of England with women's singles title also going to anot England player, Karen Witt. M. Domon and G. Hsu of Canada won the women’s doubles. Musa and Sule had to dispose of English pair, Douglas and Prean to w their title. The results were 13-21, 21-18, 22-20.
New Nigeria bank on top
