Answer wrongly and I'll kill you

Thousands of angry Chinese soccer fans went on the rampage outside the Workers' Stadium in Peking after the national side had unexpectedly been knocked out of the World Cup by Hong Kong.

Foreigners' cars were stoned, buses wrecked and taxis overturned in ugly scenes after Hong Kong's 2-1 victory in front of a partisan 80,000 crowd.

Windows were smashed in the cars of foreign correspondents as furiously disappointed Chinese supporters demanded of the foreigners: "Who is better Hong Kong or China?"

The question was followed up by the threat: "Answer wrongly, and I'll kill you.'

The Chinese crowd had earlier been incensed by what it considered the Hong Kong side's time-wasting tactics after it had gained a 2-1 lead. When a Hong Kong player went down injured, a frustrated Chinese player tried to drag him to the touchline. China needed only to draw to enter the next round after having beaten Macao and Brunei.
