I weep

Ato Imbeah

I weep
But not for you
Because I cannot weep
For someone else
So I weep for myself
For my state of being
But my tears
Have a relationship
A relationship
Made possible by your
Watching me weep
And wanting to weep too
Not for yourself
For your state of being
And our tears are not
Confined to our cheeks
But go beyond us
And even more than that
For the moment they see us weep
They start to weep too
Rather than to look on
Their tears start flowing
Not for me
Not for you
But for themselves
For their state of being
And a whole people
Sharing and caring
Shedding and giving
Mature in a paradox
Of a lifetime
Standing individually
Yet are together
And being together
We are one
And as we weep
We weep
Not for me
Not for you
Not for themselves
For our state of being
And standing alone -
One by one -
Never destroys our individuality
And weeping thus
Never destroys our oneness!
