Muhammed's world title fight on Dec 10

The hopes and aspirations of Prince Mama Muhammed, Ghanaian leading contender to the World light-heavyweight crown, to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Azumah Nelson, becomes a reality on Tuesday, December 10, when he mounts the ring for the world championship title.

Mama faces American J.B. Williamson for the title vacated by Michael Spinks. The venue is the Los Angeles Feli Forum where Ghana's David Kotei Poison won the WBC featherweight title in 1975.

Contracts for the fight, according to Graphic Sports quoting Muhammed's Nigerian manager Nnamdi Moweta, has already been signed.

Prince Muhammed, who turned professional on the eve of the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980, has fought 34 times with a neat record of 32 wins, one draw and a single loss.

He is very popular in Los Angeles where he is currently based. Williamson, his December 10 opponent, has won 21 bouts as a professional with one loss.

Azumah back to business

World featherweight champion Azumah Nelson has started intensive training for his third title defence on Saturday December 7. Azumah, who meets Marcos Villassana of Mexico in Los Angeles, is already in the United States with his trainer F.M. Moses. The world champion flew to Accra from Britain after his first round knock-out win over Pat Cowdell at the Birmingham Exhibition Centre last October 12.

Azumah was originally scheduled to box Villassana in his first title defence but when an unknown Mexican beat his compatriot in a non-title bout, the WBC by-passed him for Juvanal Ordenes of Chile. Ordenes was stopped in the fifth round.

GFA drops controversial 3 away points system

The Ghana Football Association, obviously under pressure, has dropped its controversial three away points system. Consequently victory in the league will carry two points each.

Under the three away points system, any win recorded in an away match carried three points while a home win earned the victors two points.

A GFA spokesman said three clubs would be promoted from the second division with three dropped from division one.

Ghana League results

One win and five draws heralded the 1985-86 national soccer league in Ghana. The only victory was recorded by Okwahu United who caused a stir with their 2-0 defeat of Sekondi Eleven Wise at the Sekondi Gyandu Park.

In Accra, Boye Sowah's Zebi held champion club Hearts of Oak to a 1-1 draw; Great Olympics and Real Tamale drew 3-3 at Tamale; Asante Kotoko and newly-promoted Goldfields failed to score at Obuasi, Arnold Warriors held Dwarfs to a goalless draw at Cape Coast while Hasaacas and Corners drew goalless at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.

Sports Aid cancelled

Next month's Sports Aid Day of Action for Africa's starving has been cancelled after several top sportsmen pulled out of the event due to be held in the Olympic arenas of Los Angeles and Munich, organisers said in Bonn on Saturday.

Chief organiser Pascal Zimmer told Reuters the decision to call off the December 14 event was made on Friday. He said he was 'bitterly disappointed and angry'.

The Sports Aid Day, planned as a sequel to the internationally televised Live Aid pop concerts in London and Philadelphia in July, had been expected to raise millions for famine relief.

Hearts to poach no more

Ghanaian champion club, Hearts of Oak, have decided not to poach any player from outside the club's own nursery grounds the under-20s by the end of 1986.

A resolution contained in the club's 74th anniversary message delivered by Mr Marcus Hughes in his capacity Executive as Chairman, pledged to give the nursery group priority attention.

Consequently, Mr. H.K. Amankwah, executive member of the club, has been appointed chairman of a committee to run the under-20s.

Body to direct Ghana Colts football

A 16-member National Colts Committee has been inaugurated in Accra to administer colts football under the banner of the Ghana Football Association.

Mr K. Antwi-Gyamfi, chairman of the Organisation of Ghana League Association, is chairman. Other members are Mr E.K. Edusei, Mr T.V. Musah, Mr E. Adika, Mr Jacob Ashong, Mr William Quarcoopome, Mr E. Anku, Mr Alex Borlabi, Mr Adjei-Mensah, Mr Eric Kodie and representatives from all the regions.

Africa Sports are WAFU lords

Africa Sports of Ivory Coast won the West African Football Union championship with a 2-0 victory over Togo's Ifode Atakpame in the Togolese capital, Lome.

The Ivorians who took a handsome first leg 3-0 lead to Lome thus wrapped up a 5-0 aggregate win. The win marks a treble for the Ivorians who won both the league and FA Cup in their country of origin. But it would be scorned at in Nigeria, whose champion club and defend- ing WAFU champions New Nigeria Bank qualified on merit to meet the Ivorians for the championship but had to withdraw as a result. of what Nigerian football officials describe as inhuman treatment of visiting teams by Ivorian fans.

Amoako heads Ghanaeus Volleyball

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has reconstituted the Ghana Volleyball Association with Mr Emmanuel Amoako, sports editor of the Weekly Spectator as chairman. Other members of the reconstituted association are: Alhaji Abu, sales manager of Allied Foods; Mr Ben Ephson, a freelance journalist; Mr Abraham Adjetey, an accountant with the Tema Development Corporation; Mr Kofi Sanka, a barrister-at-Law.

The rest are: Chief Inspector Ben Mensah of the Ghana Police Force; Mr C.K.T. Dugbatse of the P&T Corporation; Mr L.S. Adjei of State Insurance Corporation; and Mr E Ofusu Gyamera, an Accra businessman.

The Armed Forces, Prisons Service, Ghana Educational Service and the Ghana University Sports Association are expected to name their representatives to serve on the association.

Twenty nine referees pass exams

Twenty nine candidates were successful in the refereeing training examination organised by the Lagos Referees Council. Clubs The successful candidates were expected to appear before a screening panel to enable them to decide who merits consideration for top match officiating.

Meanwhile, all grades of referees in the state are requested to attend a refresher course on September 28.
