Prince Mama loses on points
American J. B. Williamson manhandled Prince Mama Mohammed of Ghana to win the World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight title vacated by Michael Spinks on a unanimous points decision over 12 rounds.Williamson, 28, used heavy body shots and short combinations to defeat Mohammed, who landed only one telling blow as his left-handed assault proved ineffective.
Spinks had to surrender the WBC title after beating Larry Holmes for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) heavyweight crown in October.
Judges Marty Sammon and James Jin Kin scored the fight 117-111 and Dick Young had 116-112, for Williamson. "This is what I've been waiting 16 years for, ever since I was 12 years old", Williamson, who trains in the same gymnasium as Mohammed, told reporters.
"I took the fight constantly to him. I think I was physically stronger and quicker. The body was not made to endure the type of punishment I gave him" Williamson said. Mohammed, the eldest son and heir apparent of Chief Issah Mohammed of Ghana's Dagomba Tribe, said that he was baffled by Williamson's tactics. "What I expected was not what I saw in the ring, the holding, swerving me round. "I am not used to it." said Mohammed whose record fell to 31 wins, two losses and two draws. "I give him the credit for winning it today, but Prince Mohammed will be back," he said.
The fight was mandated by the WBC after American Marvin Johnson, the number one contender, opted to fight Leslie Steward of Trinidad for the World Boxing Association (WBA) crown in February.
The Azuma Nelson-Marcos Williamson world title fight has been postponed indefinitely.
