Talking Drums

The West African News Magazine

We need leaders, we need responsible citizens sufficiently dissatisfied with things as they are and impatient enough to do something about it, intelligently, quietly, wisely. We need critics too, for dissenting is a serious, worthy and honest pursuit.

Our Story

Talking Drums was a West African News Magazine that was published from 1983 to 1986 in London. It was founded by three journalists who were compelled to create a space for accurate news coverage and a piercing critique of the story of West Africa even as they found themselves in exile. Bearing witness and breaking news, it provided a space for discussion of life in Africa even as voices were being silenced all over the continent.
